Fish tail cactus is usually a common name for the fishbone or ric-rac cactus, a tropical jungle cactus with long, flat, zig-zag stems that hang and trail from the pot. It is grown mainly as an indoor or shaded balcony plant for its unusual foliage and occasional night-blooming, fragrant flowers.

Plant details

  • Belongs to the epiphytic cactus group, naturally growing in trees where its stems hang down like ladders rather than standing upright in desert sand.

  • Stems are green, flattened and deeply lobed, creating a fishbone or fish tail pattern; mature plants can trail 60–100 cm or more from a hanging basket.

Light and temperature

  • Prefers bright, indirect light—near an east or north window or in filtered sun; strong afternoon sun can scorch the tender stems.

  • Ideal temperature is roughly 18–26 °C, with protection from cold drafts and frost; growth slows below about 15 °C.

Watering and soil

  • Unlike desert cacti, the fishbone cactus likes slightly moist but never waterlogged soil; water when the top 2–3 cm feel dry, then let excess water drain.

  • Use a very well-draining mix, such as cactus soil blended with orchid bark or perlite, to mimic its airy, epiphytic habitat and prevent root rot.

Extra care tips

  • Feed lightly with a cactus or balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–8 weeks in spring–summer, and pause feeding in winter.

  • High humidity (around 50–70%) supports lush growth; occasional misting or a pebble tray helps in dry indoor air.

  • To encourage blooming in autumn–winter, give the plant slightly cooler nights and reduce watering for a short rest period.
