Neoregelia bromeliads are compact, colourful foliage plants valued more for their patterned leaves than for their small, hidden flowers. They work very well as indoor table‑top plants or as accent plants in shaded outdoor tropical corners and patios.
Neoregelia forms a low rosette of strap‑shaped leaves that create a central “cup” or tank where water collects.
Foliage can show striking variegation, banding and speckling, and the centre often deepens in colour as the plant reaches blooming stage.
Plants are epiphytic by nature, so roots mainly anchor the plant and the leaves/tank supply much of the moisture.
Indoors, Neoregelia prefers bright indirect light or filtered sun; too little light makes colours fade, while harsh midday sun can scorch leaves.
Outdoors, it suits warm, frost‑free climates (roughly zone 10–11) in partial shade, or can be kept in pots that move indoors during cold months.
Ideal uses include terrariums, tables, balcony corners, mounting on driftwood and as underplanting beneath taller tropicals.
Use a very free‑draining, airy mix (orchid bark, coco chips, perlite etc.); never sit the pot in standing water to avoid rot.
Keep the central cup partly filled with clean water and flush it periodically so it does not stagnate.
Water the potting mix lightly when it is nearly dry; these plants dislike constantly wet soil.
Provide good humidity and occasional misting, and feed very weak, diluted fertiliser into the cup or onto the mix during the growing season.
