Jacaranda mimosifolia, commonly called Neel Mohar, is a fast-growing ornamental tree famous for its clouds of lavender‑purple, trumpet-shaped flowers in late spring and summer. It develops an airy, fern-like canopy that gives excellent shade and a dramatic “purple carpet” effect when the blooms fall to the ground.
Deciduous to semi-evergreen tree, typically reaching 8–15 m in Indian conditions with a wide, spreading crown and finely divided, mimosa-like leaves. Flowers appear in large panicles on bare or just-emerging branches, followed by flat, woody seed pods.
Best used as a specimen or avenue tree in large gardens, farms, institutions and parks; young plants can be kept in big pots for a few years before ground planting.
Requires full sun, warm to hot climate and well-drained sandy or loamy soil; does not like waterlogged or very heavy clay. Water regularly for the first 1–2 years, then only during long dry spells once established, as it becomes moderately drought-tolerant.
Space trees at least 6–8 m apart to allow for canopy spread, and protect young plants from strong winds and frost; light pruning in late winter helps maintain structure without ruining the natural, open form.
